“I learned English
watching TV” “You know what I did? I changed my TV channels to English
and I practice like that”
And of course you do!
Let’s set the mood...
It's Saturday afternoon. Oh no! Not just any afternoon, a rainy afternoon. No one is at home. It’s
just you and the TV. You start zapping, where does your finger stop? A soccer
game, perhaps? Do you prefer movies or tv series? If so, which are your
favorite titles? Do you laugh at Sheldon
Cooper from The Big Bang Theory? Or enjoy the mistery of Dexter? Do you prefer
comedy or drama?
It’s a bit of a cliché to say you learn English by watching
TV, but it’s actually not a crazy idea. There are studies which confirm that a
student who watches tv and intentionally tries to improve his/her language will
have “éxito”.
But what does purposefully mean? We’ll go over this in the
class, but in order to show you, I would like you to share some suggestions of
tv series.
So, reply this entry by telling me at least two tv series
you watch and enjoy. Let’s see which one is the most popular…!
If no ideas are coming to your mind… you can check out this list:
Popular TV Series
I'm very 90's so I'm not going to tell you guys the today's mainstream tv series; I'm going to play like a hipster and push a little harder this time.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, of course I learned some english thanks to my tv, but mostly thanks to The Beatles. The way they wrote their songs (I wanna hold YOUR hand, SHE loves YOU, the way SHE woos ME, etc) helps a lot to understand where to put the "s" at the end of a verb! (though, this "s" topic is a matter of a different entry of this blog).
So, I watch whatever tv serie I find a little attractive and the gender of it doesn't matter that much.
If you wanna have fun (is it cool that I use "wanna" instead of "want to" on the blog?) you could watch "whose line is it anyway?". Is about 4 guys that make everything up and the points don't matter. Yes, the points are like the play-doh pompons. Is like the chilean tv serie "Los improvisadores" (actually it's the other way around), but the guys from the US and UK version of the show are comedians (not just actors, like the chilean version).
It's a very funny show but you need a very skilled ear (the talk very fast and make different accents) and need to know a lot of miscellaneous "US TV culture" so you can have a good laugh.
And another tv serie could be "Misfits". Is not a 90's but is pretty cool. It's about a group of young people or so that are misfits. As if they weren't misfits enough, a lightning struck them and they become like superheros. The lightning gives a specific ability to each one of them. It's a tv show from UK so the accents are pretty difficult but it help to practice.
